Insurance and AI, answered

Short answers to what insurance teams ask first. The buyer’s guide covers where AI pays off, what to demand from any vendor, how to run a pilot and what waiting costs.

What is AI claims automation?

AI claims automation is software that reads claim documents, such as the first notice of loss, photos, estimates, medical records and demand letters, and checks them against the policy and the insurer's rules. It sizes and routes new claims, drafts coverage positions with the policy wording cited, and flags possible fraud or subrogation. The adjuster still decides and signs; Botminds builds its claims solutions this way, with every finding linked to its source.

How does AI help insurance underwriting?

AI reads submissions, ACORD forms, schedules of values, loss runs and medical records, keys the data, and checks it against appetite and underwriting guidelines before an underwriter looks. The underwriter gets a file that is already cleared and summarized, with each figure traced to its page, and spends their time pricing and deciding. Botminds offers solutions for commercial submission clearance, loss run analysis and life underwriting medical record summaries.

Is AI in insurance compliant with the NAIC model bulletin?

The NAIC Model Bulletin on the Use of Artificial Intelligence Systems by Insurers, adopted on 4 December 2023, does not ban AI; it expects insurers to keep a written AI program with governance, risk controls, testing and due diligence on vendors. By 8 October 2026, the NAIC listed 29 jurisdictions that had adopted it. Compliance depends on how the insurer governs the system, so choose tools that cite their sources, record every human sign-off and support your model inventory.

Can AI deny an insurance claim?

It should not decide on its own. The safe design is for AI to read, check and draft while a qualified adjuster or examiner decides and signs. On Botminds, consequential decisions such as paying, denying or referring a claim wait for a person, and every step is recorded in an audit log.

How does AI detect insurance fraud?

AI reads each new claim's notes, documents, photos and prior claims, and scores it on plain-language reasons, such as an edited invoice, a repeated contractor or a link to earlier suspect claims. Claims above a set line go to a special investigations analyst with the evidence attached, and that person decides whether to refer. The Coalition Against Insurance Fraud estimated in 2022 that fraud costs the United States about $308.6 billion a year.

Does the EU AI Act apply to insurers?

Yes, in part. The EU AI Act lists AI used for risk assessment and pricing of individuals in life and health insurance as high-risk, with requirements for risk management, data quality, documentation and human oversight. Under the Digital Omnibus on AI agreed by EU legislators in May 2026, those obligations apply from 2 December 2027 instead of 2 August 2026.

How long does it take to deploy AI in an insurance operation?

It depends on the process and the systems it must connect to, but a focused pilot on one process with a measured baseline is the usual starting point, rather than a multi-year program. Botminds starts from a library of ready insurance solutions, or builds a new one from your requirements, and deploys it as part of the build once its quality gates pass.

Is our policyholder data used to train the AI?

With Botminds, no: your inputs and outputs are not used to train models. Botminds runs as multi-tenant SaaS, in a dedicated cloud environment, or fully on-premises, with tenant isolation, AES-256 encryption at rest and immutable audit logs. Ask any vendor for this in writing, along with current SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 reports.

What insurance work should AI automate first?

Start with high-volume, document-heavy work where the rule is written down and a person already signs the outcome: submission clearance, loss run analysis, first notice of loss triage, coverage checks, policy checking and bordereaux review. These are easy to measure against today's baseline and keep the decision with your staff.

How do MGAs and carriers use AI for bordereaux and delegated authority?

AI maps each delegate's monthly bordereau into the carrier's layout, checks every row against the binder's limits, classes and territories, and flags breaches with the reason. That lets capacity providers review every bound risk and delegated claim as it arrives instead of sampling at an annual audit. Botminds offers bordereaux management, binding authority compliance and delegated claims audit solutions.
