How it works →Utilities and AI, answered
Short answers to what utilities teams ask first. The buyer’s guide covers where AI pays off, what to demand from any vendor, how to run a pilot and what waiting costs.
What is AI for utilities?
AI for utilities is software that reads, checks and drafts the work behind customer, billing, metering, asset, field, grid and water operations: investigating complaints, clearing held bills, triaging meter exceptions, screening inspection findings and assembling regulatory evidence. The best systems cite every value to its source and leave consequential decisions to a qualified person. Botminds offers a library of such solutions for electricity and water utilities.
How does AI help utility customer operations?
AI investigates each complaint or enquiry against the bill, the meter reads and the call notes, drafts a cited answer, and tracks the regulatory clock so cases are escalated before they breach. The handler checks the evidence and signs the letter. Botminds' Utility Complaint Management solution works this way, with the handler signing every letter.
How does AI help utility asset management?
AI screens drone images and inspection reports for defects, extracts findings from condition assessments, scores asset health and turns findings into prioritised work requests, each linked to the evidence behind it. Engineers and planners keep the decision on what gets repaired and when. Botminds offers solutions for drone inspection analytics, asset health indexing, condition report review and maintenance knowledge search.
Is AI for utilities compliant with the EU AI Act?
It depends on the use. Annex III of the EU AI Act lists AI used as a safety component in the management and operation of water, gas, heating or electricity supply as high-risk, and an amendment in force since 27 July 2026 moves those obligations from 2 August 2026 to 2 December 2027. Back-office work such as complaint drafting or billing checks is not named in that category, but every use should be assessed, and work that touches operational safety should stay under human control with a full audit trail.
Can AI help utilities meet NERC CIP requirements?
AI can assemble and check audit evidence by requirement, track patch evaluations against their deadlines and match industrial control system advisories to the assets you own. CIP-007-6, for example, requires security patches to be evaluated at least once every 35 calendar days. Botminds offers NERC CIP audit evidence management and OT patch management solutions; your compliance team still owns the evidence it submits.
Can AI help with lead service line inventories?
Yes. AI can read tap cards, work orders and installation records, classify each service line's material and flag lines whose material is unknown for a field check, with every classification linked to its record. EPA's Lead and Copper Rule Improvements, finalised in October 2024, require US water systems to identify and replace lead service lines within 10 years. Botminds' Lead Service Line Inventory solution does this classification work.
Is utility data used to train AI models?
It should not be, and you should get that in writing. With Botminds, your inputs and outputs are not used to train models, data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and each customer's data is isolated from every other customer's.
Can AI for utilities run on-premises?
Some vendors only offer public cloud, so ask. Botminds runs as multi-tenant SaaS, in a dedicated cloud environment, or fully on-premises, with the same controls wherever your policy requires the data to live.
How long does it take to deploy AI in a utility?
It depends on the process and on access to your systems and documents, so ask each vendor for a dated plan for your first process. On Botminds, each solution is tested through functional and non-functional quality gates and delivered already live, so deployment is part of the build rather than a separate project. Plan a measured pilot on your own backlog before you scale.
Does AI replace utility staff?
No. AI takes over gathering and cross-checking evidence; people review the draft, decide and sign. In practice handlers, analysts and planners spend more time on judgement and less on searching systems, and the know-how of experienced staff can be captured with citations before they retire.
